June 5

June 5
Got our coffee and on the road by 715. Taking Rt 16 out of Custer east to the Badlands.  We’ve been seeing signs on the highway for Walls Drug for at least a day, so we stopped. It’s a small section of a town with all kinds of stores on both sides of the street. Coffee is five cents and you can get a free iced water.  One family owns the whole area.
Back on Rt 90 to head to the Badlands, about a half hour drive.  We entered Badlands National Park and drove around Rt 240 loop. Words cannot express the beauty and desolation this area. The spiritual feeling and the vastness of the peaks and gullies, the hundreds of color variations are beautiful. It reminds us of monstrous sand castles.

Driving Rt 90 for 206 miles is pretty boring.  It is mostly farmland and one area crosses over the Missouri River in Chamberlain.
Almost 3 more hours to go. It’s 3 o’clock now and we did go through a time change just before Lyman.  It’s 530 we are entering the road to Cottonwood, finally! It was the longest most boring road. Thank God it’s along the lake and among trees. 90° now. We have a nice site and clean restrooms, little cottonwood seedlings everywhere and nasty biting flies.  We bought some cold drinks and we will just hang out here until time for bed.

  1. I-90 is indeed boring and often very windy and HOT! My first Harley ride west to Sturgis, it was 115 degrees in the shade (if you could find any). That’s why on future rides I often jumped south, off the ridge that I-90 is on, and go backroads through Nebraska.
