May 25

May 25
We are out by 7:15 heading over to the General Grant Tree. We have to go a different route over to this location so we won’t go too far off course heading over to Wawona Campground. We won’t be able to get over to General Sherman’s Tree. It’s a misty 59° this morning so we are in long pants and fleece. We drove a winding 30 mile long road, Dry Creek Drive, over to the north part of Sequoia into King’s Canyon National Park. Driving this road was very hairy- foggy and narrow with lots of hairpin curves at almost 6,000 feet. Temperature around 40° and light rain. We got to Kings Canyon and hiked around the loop to see General Grant’s Tree. The size of these trees are unbelievable. We walked through the Monarch Tree, a fallen Sequoia which has a tunnel through the heart of it. In the 1800’s it was used as a shelter by local loggers and the Gamlin brothers who constructed their cabin near it. Not only are these trees massive to look at upright but to be able to walk around the inside of the trunk is awesome.

About 1 1/2 hours out of Yosemite the Subaru got a flat. We found a place nearby in Fresno where they fixed it and put it on for us free.
We arrived at Wawona Campground around 3:00 to check in. The sites were tight for pop ups but we
managed. This campground is just okay and bathrooms weren’t very good, no showers, no hot water. There is a pretty river across the road and we are in the heart of Yosemite. Unfortunately it’s foggy and drizzling so we were unable to appreciate the beauty of this area. We drove up to Glacier Point which was about a 45 minute drive along a winding road and the higher we got the more foggy it became. It is 38° at the top and when we arrived we really couldn’t see anything.

We headed back down to our site, cooked dinner and made sure all our food and cleaning supplies were put into the bear box.
We climbed into our camper with our little heater and relaxed until bed.
