May 4

This morning we were up, showered, packed, breakfast and out by 8:30am. We have been hitting traffic getting out of Maryland and into Virginia. About 11:00 and we have 1.5 hours before we get to Poplar Grove National Cemetery. Noticing in Virginia that most of the trees have fully bloomed. Another beautiful day 92°. Arriving at the Cemetery we noticed how peaceful and quiet the area is. We walked around and then sat to enjoy the peacefulness. This was the area Tom’s great grandfather fought, was wounded and captured.

After leaving Poplar Grove we drove over to Petersburg Visitor Center where we got directions to the National Battlefield Museum. Here we saw a short film on the war at Petersburg and confirmed that the place we visited was the actual battlefield that his great grandfather was wounded.
Now we are heading over to Pocahontas State Park for a night. Arrived and set up. OMG loving this park. Peaceful and in the middle of nowhere. We set up, made supper (quick sauce with gnocchi and cucumber and tomato salad), showered and headed to bed. We were so tired we didn’t have the energy to do any of the hiking trails.
